Why Hello There, Old Friend!

It’s so interesting to see how some old habits repeat, even after such long periods in between! Without consciously recognizing what I’ve been doing, I’ve been compulsively logging on to the student portal for Wits University a few times each day for the last week or so just to check if the application status for GEMP 2019 has magically changed at all.

I know this is an irrational behaviour – the deadline for submission of results for this year’s applicants is only 15 December 2018, so nothing will likely change before then… And then even possibly until mid-January. But I can’t help it!! It reminds me so vividly of last year, where I had the exact same habit of checking the student portal first thing when I got into the office, at lunch time, and before I left work for the day. EVERY DAY! It becomes an almost familiar feeling and routine, like an old friend coming back in to your life after an absence.

The anticipation of finding out whether an offer has been made is overwhelming, and the waiting is by far the worst part of the whole application process! The idea of having to wait another 2- to 2-and-a-half months to find out is torturous! If you’re currently in the same boat – I FEEL YOU HOMIES! Hopefully the next couple of months fly by!

Hurry-up and Wait

I am not a fan of uncertainty. Particularly when it comes to life-altering decisions. Especially when it comes to waiting. Where I will live, where I will study, what I will earn, which student loans I need, and what I will be doing in two months’ time (and for the next 4- to 6 years) is completely uncertain at the moment.

Today I had a meeting at Wits University to discuss my application for the Graduate Entry Medical Program (GEMP). I wanted to find some pretence of certainty in what is a very uncertain situation.

I was hoping for clarification on when we will be informed of the outcome of our applications. I was hoping for some indication, positive or negative, on where my application ultimately stood. I was hoping for a realistic estimation of the chances of acceptance into next years program.

HELP! Jobs in Medical School?

I need your advice!

gif

One of the things that has been on my mind constantly the last few weeks has been the financial implications of medical school. Student loans are a given, and thus so is debt.

What type of jobs (if any) have you had during med school, or what ideas have you had of ways of earning some extra cash while studying that doesn’t require massive amounts of time or dedication? Is working while in med school a wise idea?

I’m admittedly a bit out of touch on this matter – I’ve had one job over the past eight years, and it has been a full-time, 10+ hours-a-day job that is not at all feasible with studying!

PLEASE HELP!

Wits GEMP: Biographical Questionnaire and Research Plagiarism?

This year there were some extra requirements for the Wits GEMP application; those applicants who had written and passed the WAPT were subsequently asked to complete a short biographical questionnaire to ascertain some more general info on their background, as well as to grant possible extra points to ones application and overall composite index (CI).

The questions focused on research, leadership, work experience, and socio-economic status:
